Our Story

When my cousin was young, my family noticed his development was delayed, he wasn’t walking at one nor was he starting to speak. A diagnosis came shortly after of 1p36 deletion syndrome, a rare condition which causes moderate to severe intellectual disability, delayed growth and limited speech ability. Our family was worried, naturally for his health but, perhaps more importantly, how does he live a full and healthy life?

22 years on, my cousin has turned into a fine young man, someone who loves the emergency services, going out for a coffee and watching the footie. His condition does stop him from speaking but he uses Sign Supported English to communicate with us all.

I have grown up with my cousin and found my self becoming closer to him each day, he has taken everything that life has put in his way and come out a stronger human, he is someone I am in awe of. My cousin’s name is Isaac and this is for him.
